What is a Sewage Treatment Plant?

A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is a facility that processes domestic and municipal wastewater to remove contaminants before the treated water is discharged or reused. The process involves physical, biological, and chemical treatment stages that remove suspended solids, organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens.

Modern STP systems use technologies including MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor), MBR (Membrane Bioreactor), SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor), and conventional activated sludge processes — each suited to different capacities and site conditions.

In India, STPs are mandatory for residential societies above 20,000 sqm built-up area, commercial complexes, hotels, hospitals, and all industrial facilities discharging domestic effluent — as per CPCB norms and local Pollution Control Board regulations.

Sewage Treatment Plant in Uttar Pradesh — Why It Matters

Uttar Pradesh covers a wide spread of industrial and regulatory activity, from Noida Special Economic Zone, Greater Noida Industrial, Kanpur Industrial Area, Agra Industrial Estate to fast-growing residential markets. Rather than one generic Uttar Pradesh-wide page, Optima maintains a dedicated, locally detailed page for each Uttar Pradesh city we actively serve — including Agra, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Kanpur, Lucknow and others — each covering that city's specific regulatory body, local industrial zones, and pricing.

This page exists as a starting point to help you find the right one. Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) enforces wastewater treatment across the state. ETP mandatory for all industrial units. STPs required for housing projects under RERA norms.

Uttar Pradesh Wastewater Challenges & How Optima Solves Them

Uttar Pradesh combines the country's largest population with some of its most sensitive river systems. The Ganga basin cities (Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi) face sustained pressure to stop untreated sewage reaching the river, while the western belt of Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad drains towards the Hindon and Yamuna. Tribunal oversight in these cases has pushed regulators to inspect private plants more closely, not only municipal ones.

The most visible lesson came from Noida, where UPPCB reviewed 95 listed group-housing societies and reported that most were defaulting on STP installation, operation or discharge norms, with environmental compensation imposed as a result. The common causes were plants that were never installed, plants that were installed but not run, and plants that ran without a valid operating consent. Industrial clusters in Kanpur, Agra and the Noida region add process effluent on top of domestic load.

How Optima solves it: we design for compliance first. That means correct sizing, tertiary polishing and disinfection where the consent demands it, a documentation pack for consent renewals, and AMC visits that log the same parameters inspectors check. The city pages below give local detail for Ghaziabad, Noida and others we actively serve.

STP Norms & Compliance in Uttar Pradesh

There is no single Uttar Pradesh STP law. The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) controls consent under the Water Act, and development authorities such as Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad (GDA), Lucknow (LDA) and Kanpur decide through their byelaws whether a building must have its own plant. As a working rule, large group-housing projects, townships and most commercial, institutional and hospitality buildings in urban Uttar Pradesh are expected to install and run an STP.

The sequence is Consent to Establish before construction, then Consent to Operate before occupation. UPPCB's own filings show that operating without consent attracts environmental compensation even when sampled water meets the limits. Projects above 20,000 sq m of built-up area additionally need environmental clearance, and plants near the Ganga and its tributaries are held to closer scrutiny.

The NGT's April 2019 order set a BOD ceiling of 10 mg/L for new STPs in large cities, with suspended-solids and faecal coliform limits alongside. UPPCB applies limits through each consent, so we design to the numbers in your letter.

STP Solutions Across Uttar Pradesh

Optima serves Uttar Pradesh through dedicated pages for each city we actively work in — each with its own local details on regulations, industrial zones, and pricing. Pick your city below.

STP Capacity & Technology for Uttar Pradesh

Typical capacities across Uttar Pradesh. Using planning norms of 135 litres per resident per day for housing, 45 for offices and day students and 450 per hospital bed, with sewage at roughly 80% of water used, a 300-flat society needs about 175 KLD, a 5,000-student campus with 1,000 hostellers needs about 300 KLD, and a 300-bed hospital needs 110 to 120 KLD. Townships and municipal-scale projects run into MLD and call for SBR or MBR designs.

Choosing MBBR, MBR or SBR in Uttar Pradesh. MBBR is the standard for housing societies, hotels and colleges. MBR suits basement plants and sites with demanding reuse targets, mainly in Noida and Ghaziabad high-rises. SBR suits campuses and townships with variable flow, and municipal plants in the state already use SBR and MBR at large scale. Industrial clusters should plan an ETP matched to their process and a separate domestic STP for staff. Use the city links on this page for local detail.
