Lucknow's wastewater is defined by the Gomti. The river runs about 30 kilometres through the city, and municipal records have listed roughly 33 drains discharging into it, with a Namami Gange action plan now proposing to tap and divert dozens of drains and to add or upgrade plants. The city has around ten municipal plants with a combined capacity of about 630 MLD, including the large Bharwara plant, but untreated drain flow and sewer gaps remain, and tribunal petitions over Gomti pollution are active.

For private projects the consequences are practical. Consent to Operate should be obtained before occupation. Tribunal records from the state show that complexes operating without it have been assessed environmental compensation even where sampled water met limits. Because the Gomti is under an active restoration plan, projects close to the river or its drains should expect closer scrutiny and should document discharge and reuse routes carefully.

Projects above 20,000 sq m of built-up area need environmental clearance. The Tribunal's April 2019 order set a BOD ceiling of 10 mg/L for new STPs in large cities; UPPCB applies limits through each consent, so we design to the numbers in yours.

Sizing examples. A 400-flat township with about 2,000 residents at 135 litres uses roughly 270 KLD and returns about 216 KLD, so a 225 KLD plant is a sensible fit. A 150-bed hospital at 450 litres per bed uses about 68 KLD and returns around 54 KLD, with a stricter disinfection stage. A 100-room hotel with about 200 beds at 180 litres uses about 36 KLD and returns roughly 29 KLD before kitchen peaks.

MBBR, MBR or SBR for Lucknow? MBBR is the dependable standard for townships, hotels and offices.
