Hollow fiber is our default recommendation for most drinking water and RO pre-treatment applications specifically because of its backwash capability and fouling tolerance — spiral wound configurations are typically reserved for specific process applications where the feed water quality is consistently well-characterized.

Robust Pre & Post Treatment: Ideal as a standalone system or as a pre-treatment to protect expensive RO membranes from fouling.
UF membrane performance is measured by flux (the rate water passes through per unit membrane area) and permeability — both of which decline over time as suspended solids, organics, and biological growth accumulate on the membrane surface, a process called fouling. Regular Forward Flush and Backwash cycles handle routine fouling automatically, but periodic Clean-in-Place (CIP) using chemical cleaning solutions is still required — typically monthly to quarterly depending on feed water quality — to recover flux that daily flushing alone can't restore. Skipping scheduled CIP is the most common reason UF plants show gradually declining output over their first year, well before any membrane actually needs replacement.

An Ultrafiltration (UF) Plant is a membrane-based water treatment system that removes particles as small as 0.02 microns from water — including bacteria, viruses, colloids, and high-molecular-weight organics. Unlike RO, UF membranes do not alter the mineral composition of water.
UF membranes (pore size ~0.01–0.1 micron) remove bacteria, viruses, and suspended particles but do not remove dissolved salts. RO membranes remove virtually everything including dissolved salts and minerals. UF is typically used as pre-treatment to protect RO membranes from fouling.
UF Plants are used for drinking water production, pre-treatment before RO systems, wastewater reclamation and reuse, food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical water treatment, and as a polishing step in ETP/STP effluent treatment.
UF membranes require regular automatic forward flush and backflush cycles (typically every 20–30 minutes). Chemical Enhanced Backwash (CEB) and Clean-In-Place (CIP) protocols are performed periodically. Proper pre-treatment extends membrane life to 5–7 years.
