Operation & Maintenance (O&M) of Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants

Operation & Maintenance (O&M) is the ongoing management of a water or wastewater treatment plant — daily process control, preventive maintenance, chemical dosing, compliance monitoring, and reporting — required to keep a plant running at its designed efficiency year after year. Optima Water Solutions operates and maintains STP, ETP, RO, WTP, and other treatment plants under Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC), whether or not we built the plant originally.

A treatment plant that isn't properly operated will drift out of compliance within months, regardless of how well it was engineered — biological systems need consistent monitoring, membranes need cleaning schedules, and dosing pumps need calibration. This is the single most common reason plants fail pollution control board inspections after their first year of operation, and it's why O&M is a distinct discipline from installation.

What's Included in Our O&M Contracts

  • 24x7 process management — plant operation managed around the clock, 365 days a year, with on-call emergency response
  • Analytical monitoring — regular lab testing at every treatment stage through to final discharge/reuse water quality
  • Chemical dosing management — calculating and maintaining correct chemical mixtures and dosing levels for consistent output
  • Preventive & corrective maintenance — scheduled upkeep of electromechanical equipment, instrumentation, and control systems, plus repair and asset renewal as needed
  • Trained operator deployment — skilled plant operators managed on-site or on a scheduled-visit basis depending on plant size
  • Compliance reporting — daily, weekly, monthly, and annual reports formatted for internal review and pollution control board submission
  • Administrative & financial management — complete AMC billing, consumables tracking, and vendor coordination

Typical O&M Maintenance Frequency

TaskTypical Frequency
Visual inspection & log readingsDaily
Lab testing (BOD/COD/TSS/pH)Daily to weekly, per plant category
Chemical dosing calibrationWeekly
Blower/pump servicingMonthly
Membrane (RO/UF) cleaningQuarterly, or as fouling indicates
Full electromechanical overhaulAnnual
Compliance report submissionMonthly/annual per SPCB requirement

The Most Common Reasons Plants Fall Out of Compliance

In our experience taking over O&M for plants built by other contractors, the same handful of root causes account for most compliance failures: dosing pumps left uncalibrated after initial commissioning, blowers running on a fixed schedule rather than actual oxygen demand, membrane cleaning skipped or delayed past the point of irreversible fouling, and — most commonly — no one on-site actually trained to recognize early warning signs (foaming, odor, effluent color change) before they become a lab-test failure. A good O&M contract exists specifically to catch these before they become compliance incidents, not just to respond after a violation notice arrives.

Comprehensive vs Non-Comprehensive AMC

AMC TypeWhat's CoveredBest For
Comprehensive AMCLabor + spare parts + consumables + emergency breakdown supportPlants without in-house technical staff, or where uptime is business-critical
Non-Comprehensive AMCLabor and scheduled servicing only; spares/consumables billed separatelyFacilities with an existing maintenance team needing expert oversight

Why Choose Optima Water Solutions for O&M

Optima Water Solutions is an ISO 9001:2015 certified company with 12+ years of experience and 158+ completed projects. Because we manufacture the plants ourselves, our O&M team understands the equipment at a design level, not just an operational checklist — which means faster fault diagnosis and fewer repeat breakdowns. We take over O&M for plants we didn't build as regularly as our own installations, bringing underperforming or non-compliant plants back to their designed treatment efficiency.

Common Questions

Operation & Maintenance — Frequently Asked Questions

Does Optima Water operate plants it did not build?

Yes. We operate and maintain water and wastewater treatment plants whether we built them or not. Our team has the expertise to take over O&M of any existing plant and bring it to optimal performance.

What is included in an Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC)?

Our AMC covers 24/7 management of treatment processes, analytical monitoring, chemical dosing calculations, preventive and corrective maintenance of all electromechanical equipment, staff management, and customized reporting (daily, weekly, monthly, and annual).

What is the difference between Comprehensive and Non-Comprehensive AMC?

A Comprehensive AMC covers all labor, spare parts, consumables, and repairs. A Non-Comprehensive AMC covers labor and routine maintenance only, with spare parts and major repairs billed separately. Both include 24/7 operational support.

What types of plants does Optima Water maintain?

We maintain all types of water and wastewater treatment plants including Sewage Treatment Plants (STP), Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP), Water Treatment Plants (WTP), RO systems, Softeners, UF systems, and ZLD plants.

What reporting does Optima Water provide under O&M contracts?

We provide customized customer reports on daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis covering process performance, chemical consumption, equipment status, and treated water quality parameters.
