What Actually Matters When Choosing an ETP Manufacturer?

An ETP is a harder buying decision than an STP, because industrial effluent isn't generic — a textile unit's dye-laden discharge, a pharma plant's chemical load, and a food processing unit's organic waste each need a different treatment train. A vendor who quotes the same design regardless of what your process actually discharges hasn't asked the right questions yet. Here's what to check before you sign, not a ranked list of vendors.

1. Do They Ask About Your Effluent Before They Quote?

This is the fastest way to separate a real ETP engineer from a sales team reading a price list. Your effluent's characteristics — COD, BOD, TSS, pH, presence of heavy metals or dyes — determine whether you need simple physico-chemical treatment or a multi-stage biological plus membrane train. A vendor who sends a quote before asking for a lab report or effluent characterization is guessing, not designing.

2. Industry-Specific Experience, Not Just "12+ Years"

ETP requirements differ sharply by sector — textile and dyeing units, pharmaceutical companies, food processing plants, hotels and hospitals, electroplating units, tanneries, and chemical manufacturers all fall under DPCC/CPCB mandates, but the treatment train for each is different. Ask specifically whether the vendor has designed for your industry before, not just wastewater treatment in general.

3. Can They Explain ETP vs. ZLD — and Which One You Actually Need?

A standard ETP treats effluent to a dischargeable standard. Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) goes further — 100% of wastewater is treated and recycled with no liquid effluent leaving the plant boundary, using evaporators and crystallizers after the standard treatment stages. ZLD is legally mandated for certain highly polluting sectors in critically polluted industrial clusters under NGT and MoEFCC directives, and it costs and takes substantially longer to build than a standard ETP (a prefabricated ETP can install in 2–4 weeks; a ZLD system with evaporators and crystallizers can take 6–12 months). If a vendor doesn't mention ZLD applicability at all for a sector where it's typically required, that's worth questioning.

4. Pricing — What the Range Actually Covers

ETP costs in Delhi NCR span a wide range — roughly ₹3 lakh for small systems up to ₹10 crore or more for large civil-based or ZLD plants — because capacity, effluent complexity, and treatment stage count vary so much between industries. A quote with no breakdown by stage (pre-treatment, biological, tertiary, ZLD if applicable) makes it impossible to compare vendors fairly. Ask for a stage-by-stage itemized quote.

5. Manufacturer vs. Trader — Same Rule as Any Water-Treatment Purchase

Ask directly whether the vendor fabricates in-house or subcontracts. This matters more for ETPs than STPs, because effluent-specific engineering changes (a chemical dosing adjustment, a membrane swap) are slower and more expensive to get right through an intermediary who doesn't control fabrication.

6. Compliance Paperwork Support

An ETP installation in Delhi NCR needs Consent to Establish (CTE) and Consent to Operate (CTO) from DPCC, plus ongoing compliance reporting. A vendor experienced in your sector should be able to walk you through this timeline before construction starts — CTE/CTO delays are often the slowest part of an ETP project if the paperwork isn't started early, not the fabrication itself.

  • Quotes a price before requesting an effluent lab report or characterization
  • Can't name specific past projects in your industry (textile, pharma, food processing, etc.)
