What is a Effluent Treatment Plant?

An Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) is an industrial wastewater treatment system designed to remove pollutants, heavy metals, toxic chemicals, and organic matter from industrial effluent before it is discharged into the environment or reused in the manufacturing process.

Unlike domestic sewage treatment, ETP systems must be customised to the specific effluent characteristics of each industry. Common technologies include physico-chemical treatment (coagulation, flocculation, clarification), biological treatment (aerobic/anaerobic), advanced oxidation, and membrane filtration.

The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act and CPCB norms make ETPs legally mandatory for all major industries in India. Non-compliance results in penalties, factory closure, and criminal liability for directors.

Effluent Treatment Plant in Kathmandu — Why It Matters

Kathmandu's industrial base — spanning Balaju Industrial District, Patan Industrial Estate, Bhaktapur Industrial Estate — continues to expand, and with it the need for dependable ETP capacity that meets local discharge norms. Nepal's Department of Environment regulates effluent in Kathmandu Valley. Bagmati River restoration project drives strict STP enforcement. Hotels, hospitals, and industries must install treatment systems.

We work directly with facility owners, developers, and industrial operators in Kathmandu to deliver ETP systems that are correctly sized, properly permitted, and easy to maintain long-term.

Common Questions

Effluent Treatment Plant in Kathmandu — FAQ

What is the cost of an Effluent Treatment Plant in Kathmandu?

ETP cost in Kathmandu depends on capacity, effluent type, and treatment level. A 5 KLD ETP for a small industry starts from ₹6–10 Lakh. A 100 KLD ETP for a textile plant ranges from ₹40–80 Lakh. Pharmaceutical and chemical ETPs with advanced treatment cost more. Optima provides free effluent analysis and detailed quotations — call +91 9711880791.

Is an ETP mandatory for my industry in Kathmandu?

Yes. The Bagmati Province Pollution Control Board mandates ETPs for all red and orange category industries in Kathmandu. This includes textile, chemical, pharmaceutical, electroplating, food processing, and many other sectors. Operating without a functioning ETP risks hefty fines, closure notices, and criminal proceedings against company directors.

How is an ETP different from an STP?

An STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) treats domestic wastewater (sewage from toilets, sinks). An ETP treats industrial effluent which can contain heavy metals, toxic chemicals, dyes, oils, and high-strength organic matter. ETPs require custom designs based on the specific industry's effluent characteristics. Optima designs both STP and ETP systems.

Can an ETP be upgraded to Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) in Kathmandu?

Yes. Optima Water Solutions specialises in ETP-to-ZLD upgrades. If your industry in Kathmandu is under ZLD mandate (textile, distillery, sugar, tannery etc.), we can add evaporation systems, MVR, MEE, or membrane systems to your existing ETP to achieve zero liquid discharge compliance.

How long does ETP installation take in Kathmandu?

Packaged ETPs (5–50 KLD) can be installed in Kathmandu within 6–10 weeks. Large civil-based ETPs (above 100 KLD) take 12–20 weeks. Timeline depends on civil work, equipment procurement, and site readiness. We provide a detailed project schedule after the initial site assessment.
