Electrodeionization (EDI) is a continuous electrochemical ion exchange process that uses ion exchange membranes, resins, and a DC electric current to remove dissolved ionics from water — producing ultrapure water without the chemical regeneration required by conventional ion exchange (DM plant) systems.
EDI operates as a polishing step after Reverse Osmosis (RO) to produce high-purity water meeting USP Purified Water, ASTM Type I/II, and semiconductor grade specifications. Output water typically has resistivity of 10–18 MΩ·cm and TDS below 0.1 ppm.

EDI requires RO permeate as feedwater — typically RO output with conductivity below 30 µS/cm. Free chlorine must be absent (use activated carbon or sodium bisulphite dosing).
