Optima Water Solutions is an STP Plant Manufacturer in Kolkata. We design, install, commission, and maintain Sewage Treatment Plant systems, and hold ISO 9001:2015 certification with 12+ years of experience and 158+ completed projects across India. Our STP systems meet CPCB compliance standards and serve residential societies, commercial complexes, and industrial facilities in Kolkata.
A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is a facility that processes domestic and municipal wastewater to remove contaminants before the treated water is discharged or reused. The process involves physical, biological, and chemical treatment stages that remove suspended solids, organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens.
Modern STP systems use technologies including MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor), MBR (Membrane Bioreactor), SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor), and conventional activated sludge processes — each suited to different capacities and site conditions.
In India, STPs are mandatory for residential societies above 20,000 sqm built-up area, commercial complexes, hotels, hospitals, and all industrial facilities discharging domestic effluent — as per CPCB norms and local Pollution Control Board regulations.
Kolkata's STP demand centres on two distinct zones that rarely overlap in one project: Salt Lake Sector V, which is almost entirely IT and commercial office space, and the Dankuni-Kalyani-Falta industrial belt, which is manufacturing and SEZ-driven. WBPCB's requirements differ across the two — Sector V projects are mostly straightforward domestic STP approvals, while Dankuni and Falta SEZ units often need to demonstrate treatment for both sewage and light industrial effluent depending on what the unit produces.
Kolkata's older housing stock is also a factor most newer cities do not deal with as much. A meaningful share of our Kolkata enquiries come from established residential complexes retrofitting an STP for the first time to meet a WBPCB notice, rather than new construction building one in from the start — which changes the project from a design exercise into a space-finding exercise within an already-built site.
Budge Budge's mixed industrial-residential character adds a third pattern, with smaller plot sizes than the newer SEZ zones.
Key industrial areas we serve in Kolkata:
Retrofitting an STP into an established Kolkata residential complex — common in and around older parts of the city — usually starts with a site survey to find spare land or basement space that was never planned for a treatment plant, since most buildings from an earlier construction era did not set aside room for one. We typically recommend a compact MBBR skid for these retrofits, since it fits into a smaller footprint than a civil tank-based system and does not require the extensive excavation a below-ground system would.
For Salt Lake Sector V's commercial and IT campus buildings, the flow pattern is weekday-heavy and lighter than a residential system, closer to what we design for tech park clients in other cities, and the plant can usually be smaller relative to the building's total occupant count. Dankuni, Kalyani, and Falta SEZ projects need a closer look at what each specific unit manufactures, since WBPCB's industrial effluent rules vary by product category.

In most cases, yes. We survey the site for unused basement or peripheral land and specify a compact MBBR skid system, which needs far less excavation than a full civil tank-based plant. This is our most common Kolkata project type, since many older complexes were built before STP requirements applied.
Yes. Sector V's commercial and IT buildings have a weekday-heavy occupancy pattern rather than a steady residential flow, so the plant is usually sized smaller relative to the building's total headcount than a comparable residential system would need.
It depends on what the unit manufactures — WBPCB's industrial effluent rules for SEZ and industrial belt units vary by product category, and some need combined sewage and light industrial effluent treatment rather than a standard domestic STP. We confirm this during the site assessment before quoting.
Retrofit costs vary more than new-build costs because they depend heavily on available space, typically ₹15 Lakh to ₹50 Lakh for a mid-size residential complex. Call +91 9711880791 for a site visit and firm quote once we have seen the available space.
A retrofit into an existing residential complex usually takes 6 to 10 weeks from order confirmation, slightly longer than new-construction timelines because civil work has to be coordinated around an occupied, already-built site rather than an open plot.
